Frat News: Bon mots on JuicyCampus.com, hazing went wrong yet again (pigs feet involved this time!)

Saturday, March 22, 2008

Have you visited JuicyCampus.com yet? Its so full of useful information of campus sex, dating meathead atheletes and fucking sorority whores. Unlike other campus gossip sites, you can actually name names. A typical post looks like these:

"Jesse Slobodin - I heard this dude is only into A-framing chicks, kind of wierd.... Any thoughts?"

"Always do oral on a girl and get her off FIRST before you get off...that guarantees she will have a good time and will call you back for more. Fingers, then oral, then regular sex AFTER she gets off. Thats the winning formula"

"Simon Casuto is hung, although uncircumcised, Simon has a massive and delicious jew wang."

It has a privacy policy that gurantees you can get away with almost any slandering remarks you make on the site! So I thought. Apparently, I was wrong.

Students from Colgate University and Loyola Marymount University in Southern California were identified and arrested after posting threatening messages on the site. Now, the site has been officially subpoenaed by the Office of the Attorney General and the Division of Consumer Affairs as part of a state investigation into the operation of the college gossip website.

Another piece of frat news: Pledges from
Delta Tau Delta fraternity were made to suck pig feets, old news, but still...... PUKE!!

Dartmouth student on pledging, hazing and social capital

Saturday, February 23, 2008

Excellent article from a Dartmouth student on why people want to pledge despite all the humiliations associated with it.

When I was just a wee, innocent prospie, visiting Dartmouth to decide if it was the school for me, I saw my first glimpse of the pledging process. I watched a naked frat boy running laps around a fetid basement and then crashing into a huge pile of Keystone Light cans, crushed plastic cups and torn Keystone boxes. On that particular night, he and his pledge brethren were bartending the party naked. Was it hilarious? Absolutely. Was it embarrassing for them? Surely. So why did they go through it?

The pledging process at almost any fraternity contains some trying elements, and yet over 60 percent of eligible Dartmouth students choose to brave pledge term — some admittedly more trying than others — in order to be a part of a Greek house.

Sociology professor Kathryn Lively helped explain the reasons for pledging’s prevalence and popularity.

“You only want something if it’s hard,” she said.

With the many painful myths and stories surrounding pledging, there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that pledging can be hard. And it’s the only way to be a brother.

“I think it’s hard for anyone to do something and mean it and not become part of it. If you actually want to join something and you want to take it seriously, you have to at least try,” one junior fraternity member said. The difficulties of the pledging process ensure that all those entering the fraternity truly want to be a part of the house.

On another level, hazing during pledging guarantees an integration of a pledge’s personality and a house’s personality. “It’s part of an identity process where you drag someone’s identity down a little bit and then welcome them back into the group,” Lively said. When you do that, it creates a stronger group identity.”

As well as the addition of the pledge as a true member of the group, the group is also ingrained in the pledge. “The purpose of hazing is to make one lose their identity — not completely — so the identity of a brother or a sister becomes part of a core identity,” Lively said.

Now that the identities of last fall’s pledges have been integrated into their houses, they’ll be the ones enforcing pledge rituals this time around. When asked how he felt about being an upperclassman now, the male junior said, “Can’t wait! I think that’s the general feeling amongst my class: They can’t wait. They have no ill will against the ’10s, we just want to experience the other side. It’s something new.”

This integration of identities can become a problem on campus, however. As brothers become more and more associated with their respective houses, the stereotyping can overcome one’s actual personality.

“I feel like I’ve been stereotyped as some ‘sweet dude’ in ‘the best house on campus’ but in reality I am way more than that,” the junior fraternity member said. “Basically my point is that I had serious ideas but some people don’t take me seriously because they refuse to look past this mask of stereotypes that my fraternity places on me.”

In addition to the identity and personality changes that occur as a result of hazing, other basic changes occur in the life of a pledge. All the fraternity brothers I spoke with affirmed that pledging greatly improved their pong skills, which one senior man called “essential to the life of a Dartmouth man.”

Becoming a brother in a fraternity can also affect someone’s social standing and social connections. “My social capital went through the roof. After pledge term, way more people knew me,” the junior said. “I came to appreciate a diversity of ideas more greatly and connected with people who I might not normally have connected with.”

Admitting to hazing to administrators could obviously carry serious ramifications. But the details of hazing activities are often kept secret from students outside the house as well.

“Secrecy creates a feeling of specialness,” Lively said. “If everyone has this nebulous idea that [one particular frat] has this crazy hazing … it’s the secrecy that almost makes it valuable. You’re not allowed to talk about what you do. Part of it is to make it seem like it’s more powerful than it really is.”

As the world-renowned Dr. William Ellery Channing put most eloquently: “Difficulties are meant to rouse, not discourage. The human spirit is to grow strong by conflict.”

When a pledge class is asked to strip themselves of the layers of protection that they wear around all day (pun intended) and bartend a party naked, it’s not a simple task of humiliation. Instead of their clothes being the defining mark on their bodies, their comfort in the fraternity becomes that defining mark. They put it all out there (pun intended again), and are accepted into the group.

Lambda Chi Alpha sued for over $300,000

Thursday, February 14, 2008

Lambda Chi Alpha is at it again!

Bradley Swearingen, a senior at the University of North Texas, has filed a lawsuit against Lambda Chi Alpha. His lawyer claimed that Swearingen had a neck fracture during the rush week in 2006, and missed a year of school and work to rehabilitation.

The suit named both the local chapter and the national organization, as well each of the 68 residents who lived in the Iota-Zeta chapter as defendants. It seeks unspecified damages for the medical bills, loss of income and continued pain and suffering. It was rumored that the medical bills alone were over $300,000.

Frat News: Cornell bans Sigma Pi , UT bans Pi Kappa Alpha

Friday, February 8, 2008

Want more shirtless frat guys, check this out!

Sigma Pi bros at Cornell were busted. And it wasn't one of those usual hazing incidents that resulted in the bros forced to pick up trash around the community or do voluntary work. This time, two guys were serverly wounded and were on life sustaining medical treatment.

Cornell University has revoked its recognition of the Sigma Pi fraternity, after binge drinking sent two students to the hospital back in November. The two freshmen needed life sustaining medical treatment. Cornell calls the fraternity's behavior "irresponsible" and "dangerous". Cornell's Sigma Pi Chapter can't reapply for recognition until 2009.

Not good. Not too long ago, parents sued Rider University and Phi Kappa Tau for the death of a student shortly after a frat party. The tragedy was suspected to be hazing related. The student had a blood alcohol content of .426, according to autopsy results released by prosecutors. Hazing and accidents, I think the Sigma Pi guys have got some SERIOUS problems this time.

I think we're seeing a trend here. Tennessee's chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha has just been suspended by the national organization and the university.

Pledges from the frat were hospitalized with a Staph infection two weeks ago, questions arose about what caused the infection. The infections allegedly developed from wounds sustained by the pledges from a hazing activity. The Pike house was sanitized after UT officials inspected the house and deemed it unsanitary, and an investigation followed.

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Manimal House

Monday, February 4, 2008

Once again I'm taking a risk and blogging from work for your reading pleasure! This article from the NYMag poses a question, is frat the new leather?

The muscular guy in a backward baseball cap is red-faced from howling. “Are you a man?! Do you wanna get fucked up? Well, come up, bitch, and do a beer bong!” He’s holding a can of Pabst and a homemade beer funnel. A volunteer puts the tube in his mouth, and gulps. The funnel holder nails the empty can against the wall and pumps his fist victoriously.

This might be a familiar scene at Ole Miss or UVA, but it’s somewhat exotic in a Manhattan gay bar. This is “Boys Gone Wild,” a wildly popular “frat party” at the club Boy’s Room in the East Village.

Guys in baseball caps aren’t exactly new to the gay scene, of course. But this goes beyond being a “straight-acting” sports fan. “I grew up overseas and went to acting school,” says promoter Johnny McGovern. “It’s not like I had to deal with some mean frat boy who called me a fag. I have a pure, uncut fantasy of frat boys in my head.” Apparently he’s not alone. Whether it’s the result of five years of living under the manly George Bush fratocracy, or just Abercrombie & Fitch, gay “frat” parties have also sprung up in Chicago and L.A.

“A lot of gay boys were all about hiding in college,” says Marlon Gobel, one of the party’s “pledge masters.” “They weren’t part of fraternities. This party is about taking advantage of every fantasy you had but were afraid of.”

But no reason to be too afraid: There aren’t any frat boys at the Boy’s Room to beat you up (Gobel himself de-pledged in college after coming out). “Real frat boys aren’t that hot,” concedes McGovern. “They’re mostly drunk and fat. We’re not about keeping it real, but keeping it fake.”

Sigma Phi Epsilon frat brother does gay porn!?

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

Is this for real? We report, you decide.

I am talking about Fratmen.com model Connor. This week there has been rumors saying that Connor is a real fraternity brother, and he is affiliated with Sigma Phi Epsilon.

SigEp has a great reputation. On many greek forums SigEp guys have been consistently voted as the sexiest frat guys on campus by sororities nationwide.

The Indiana University chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon was suspended in 2001 for hosting the "College Invasion" porn film crew and making sexually explicit materials on campus. The frat brothers participated were threatened with expulsion.

Ex-Fratmen Damon is back at Damonslife.com

Sunday, January 27, 2008

Good news! One of the hottest models from Fratmen is back! Damon has left Fratmen and set up his own site at DamonsLife.com. It only costs $19.95 to join the private chat and download exclusive photos. Still not convinced this is the best $19.95 ever spent? Go visit Damon's Myspace page. Damon will soon be returning to the steady medical field so go chat with him while you can. He listed his current occupation as a reality cam actor, I have to say he is probably hotter than any of the lame reality personalities we have seen on The Celebrity Apprentice. Here's what he wrote about himself:

There is a ton to know about me!! I'm very outgoing and determined to make my dreams come true, no matter what obstacles get in my way. I have an awesome connection with my family. I have some very few real friends, and they are great, and loyal. I have been wanting to make my own website for a long time and this, seemed to be the perfect time to do it! I played sports through out my whole life. I wrestled, ran track, but the best thing that ever happened to me is when my football team won the State Championship in May 2003. It's weird how when everything that you have ever worked for since you knew what football was, just comes to a stop. At that championship game, when I was looking at the time click away on the clock, I felt my heart just tearing apart a little bye little. Since we won, everyone was celebrating and so was I of course, but at the same time we knew that we would never be able to play football again for our high school, and for some of us that meant more than anything!!! After, that my life sometimes seemed kind of empty, mostly because there was no more practice and Friday night games. In school I was in the choir, and also in the school plays, and that is when I decided I wanted to act. Hey everyone! after nearly a year in LA .. I have decided to return home to Wisconsin to complete the classes I needed for my medical training. I will be done with all my classes by the end of December 2007. I will then be able to earn a steady income in the medical field while I continue to pursue acting and modeling whether I return to Los Angeles, New York or Florida. Thanks again for all the comments support and offers I REALLY appreciate them!!

Secret Confessions #5

Friday, January 25, 2008

Today's confession isn't even new in a sense that a lot of straight (with the asterisk) college guys have gone through similar situations. But it's still hot. This frat guy had a crush on an incredibly hot looking frat dude he met on the internet, they hooked up, but afterwards the guy started to ignored him. Imagine if that was you and how that would make you feel...

I'm a 19-year-old and I'm confused. I met this guy a few weeks ago (he IMed me off the Internet), and he goes to another college in the same city. Now, I'm a very masculine frat guy (in the closet), and I like the same type of guys. I ended up inviting him to one of our frat parties and he came. This guy was pretty hot, and I liked what I saw. He only stayed for 15 minutes because the party was pretty lame.

We talked on AOL the next day, and he ended up inviting me to his apartment to drink with him and his roommates. When all his roommates retired to their beds, it was just me and him. He ended up kissing me, and we retired into the backseat of my Explorer. (more)

Delta Chi guys are so HOT!!!!

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Everyone I know says Sig Ep guys are the hottest frat guys in the whole planet. I tend to agree, although I don't know that many Sig Ep bros, the one I know is pretty hot, like Abercrombie model type of hot - tanned, muscular, great eyes, and very friendly like he doesn't know he's the hottest guy in the lecture hall. Today, I found this Delta Chi webshots album and I was totally blown away! These Delta Chi guys are so hot I am speechless after viewing the albums. These pictures really brought back many fond memories of the college years, the fun, the sun, the gambling, the parties, the road trips and the alcohol. In case you want to learn more about Delta Chi, here's some information from their national office site:

On October 13, 1890 eleven law students at Cornell University formed a Law Fraternity, Delta Chi. In 1922, the Fraternity officially went "general", thus opening its membership to men in all areas of study. Delta Chi, in 1929, became the first fraternity to officially abolish the hazing practices associated with "hell week".

There are 126 chapters and colonies operating throughout the United States and Canada. Distribution is fairly even across the continent. Delta Chi has nearly 94,000 initiates.

Fraternity / Sorority Rushing: You just want them to want you

I found this awesome sorority documentary. It addresses questions like:

What is going on behind the rush scene?

How do fraternities view sororities?

How does facebook play into all these?

One of video comments goes like this:
Fraternities tend to breed a chauvinistic male-male love established in large part through promotion of heterosexual male dominance over differently gendered or gender-identifying people. Through engaging in often sexualized initiation and hazing rites (yes, hazing does occur in frats at Northwestern), some fraternities, by no means all, are engaging in homoerotic behavior for the purpose of establishing heterosexual male supremacy over their peers. Isn’t that kind of ironic?

How to pick up straight guys in college - Part 1

Monday, January 21, 2008

College years means different things for different people. For most people, it was all about books, boys, chicks and beer. Those were really the years of insecurity and jealousy. If you are like most people, when you first start college you will be lonely, wishing to mate with as many different guys as possible, and trying to establish relationships the only way you know how. No matter how hard you try, there are bound to be some people in your social world that could potentially destroy your chances of getting with the guys you want. I want to share the types of personality I’ve learned to spot and the ways to manage them.

Alpha dogs (AD): There are hot straight guys and then there are hot straight alpha dogs that will kick the shit out of you for no reasons. Know the difference! Alpha dogs are emotionally insecure, and they have this unmistakable need to dominate. If an AD isn't good looking don't even bother to talk to him. The problem is, sometimes even it you try to stay away troubles will find you. After years of observations, one relatively easy way to get an AD to be less hostile to you (at least temporarily) is to talk to him privately you are just here to have fun and not to steal girls from his social circle.

Emotionally unstable bitches / House pussies: You can find them quite easily in any frat parties or house parties but they are actually everywhere. Look out for them. They are usually young, semi attractive girls and love to start troubles. They are very good at stirring up things, and then asking their boys in the frat to kick you out. Try to stay on their good side for as long as you can, if they still want to create dramas, let the guys know you didn't touch her or be disrespectful to her.

(to be continued)

How to get a bid from a straight frat if you're gay

Sunday, January 20, 2008

"Some men joined frats to get rid of their sexuality, to hide their gayness."

Is this statement true? Maybe back in the 60s. Does it still apply? I don't know. Whether gay people belong to fraternities and how do gay guys get bids remain topics that guarantee a heated debate.

Don't forget fraternities, like all other organizations, are all about image, popularity and rankings. It is not uncommon for many frats to think that by accepting openly gay members, their brand will devaluate to future potential pledges. Also, the thought of staying in the same house with open homos may make them feel uncomfortable. Some even argued that accepting openly gay members is not conductive to organizational stability. If you are gay and plan to pledge, here are some advice:

1. Have the grace to be manly around the school: I know it's a controversial thing for me to say. Like the U.S. military, there is an unspoken rule of "don't ask, don't tell" in many fraternities. People are not stupid, bisexual and gay brothers have ALWAYS existed in ALL fraternities, even if some people would prefer otherwise. For those people, as long as you don't bring up this sensitive topic, they would appreciate your consideration for not making them feel uncomfortable and would not even bring this up as a topic of conversation.

2. Touch base with the greek advisor on campus: Although I don't think any greek organizations would put "get rid of any gay, Asian, or black pledges" in their bylaw, it is clear that some chapters are more open and progressive than the others. The greek advisor on campus is a good reference point if you need help deciding which frat is more progressive. If you must, seek confirmation on this issue from the fraternity's national office.

3. Accentuate the positive: If they found out during the rush process that you're gay/bi and you are lucky enough to still be given a bid, highlight the potential benefits that you can provide to the fraternity. E.g. you have a lot of chick friends. I don't see why a fraternity would not want more cute girls hanging around their house? Remember, a person is granted membership because the existing brothers figured that it would possibly benefit the chapter in some (often superficial) way.

4. Don't date a brother: You don't try to date a brother, simple as that.

Secret Confessions #3

Saturday, January 19, 2008

Today's installment of Secret Confessions is somewhat related to our ongoing conversations about fraternity life and the "straight guys" with the asterisk. Via StraightActing.com

I've always had an interesting internal complex that my straight friends tell me is one that is similar to one they have about cheerleaders and sorority girls in high school. While I have always loathed the fraternity scene, greek life, and everything they stand for. The hazing, the drunken stupidity, the partying, the obsession with their own toughness, how they intend to coast through life through handouts, etc. But at the same time I can't help but wish I were part of their world. I mean I do have to face it, they are some of the sexiest men I've ever seen and I would probably fall for one in a heartbeat. I always thought that I was the only person that liked them, mainly because of the people I hang out with lol. Anyway, from what I can tell gay men liking frat guys is not uncommon at all. Some gay guys have actually managed to become those hot frat guys themselves, and I have to have alot of envy for guys who can do that. They may be submitting to the american machine, but in doing so they become the most desired men and hang out with only the other most desired men. It sounds crazy and impossible for me, but I want to be like them. Im still not sure what I have to do to get there. Im a very shy person, and I feel VERY akward in anything not black. Yet I've been going to the gym regularly for the first time in my life and Im starting to notice a change. Anyway, I got off on a tangent sorry. My question is, for anyone who can identify as gay frat guy, what is it like, really? I want to know everything about it.

Straight Men Studies: How to seduce apparently straight guys

Friday, January 18, 2008

One of the most unanswered questions that many gay frat guys wonder about is: "how to seduce straight guys". This sounds paradoxical. If a guy enjoys a man's company that guy is probably gay himself by definition.

I really don't know whether it is scientifically possible to seduce ANY straight guys. The fact that it is not easy for girls to seduce gay guys is a living proof. (imagine how impossibly difficult it is to try to turn Carson Kressley straight, it's probably easier to build a refrigerator from the scratch than getting him interested in eating some pussies) There are theories out there which claim that human are inherently bisexual to a certain degree, I found them quite plausible. This theory also agrees with many real life examples that gay guys do sometimes pick up an apparently straight man. I read the below from the New York Magazine:

Thomas, 37, an investment banker who considers himself straight, has had sexual encounters with three men. What got him curious was, of all things, straight porn. “You see these girls doing certain things and you think they’re really hot, but sometimes the way they’re totally submissive you wonder what it’s like to be the woman. And most pornography involves an element of the guy’s anatomy, which is usually huge.”

On a bad vacation in Argentina with a girlfriend, he met an attractive German guy on the beach wearing a “banana hammock.” They saw each other again in the locker room, and one thing led to another—a gay Heartbreak Kid. Though Thomas said it wouldn’t happen again, they hooked up a few more times before the end of the vacation.

There were two others after that—a trainer-masseur whom he generously repaid, and an Australian he found on Rentboy .com. Like a typical macho guy, he views his exile in Gayville not as a sign he might have some thinking to do, but as an educational experience that’s made him a better lover to women. “Now when I’m with a woman and she’s into being submissive, I know it’s exciting for her and I don’t feel guilty,” Thomas says. “I understand the fantasy of being taken by a man.”

Still, he doesn’t tell girls about his trysts. “The same women who play up the whole bi thing with each other are freaked out by the idea of men touching each other. Women are always worried about being replaced—not just by women but by men too.”

There are ways to get with a straight guy...

1. Look for signals: All straight guys who are interested in experimenting would send you subtle signals that they wouldn't mind messing around with you. Pay attention to see if any of those signals come up (e.g. all of a sudden he wants to play wrestling with you, he talks sh1ts like "I need to have sex with a girl so bad right now" and puts his arm around your shoulder etc). If a guy gradually starts spending more time at your apartment, initiating closer and closer contact, those are good signs. Now it's the right time to break out some beer! Let him make the moves, this is very important!! No straight guys want to be hit on, it's a dominance thing, hitting on him will make him feel he's in the "passive" role, thus he will run away.

2. Keep your big mouth shut: Although it is tempting to kiss and tell, don't forget those straight guys who experiment prefer to do it covertly. If you have a bad reputation of being the type of person who would kiss and tell, they wouldn't take the risk to try to take anything further with you. Reputation is important.

3. Understand the rule of the game: Now you hit the jackpot, he made out with you. Time for reality check! 99% of the time he would freak out and disappear from your life for a while. You will be making a huge mistake if you keep texting him or chatting him online, it will only drive him away further. Just play it cool, reciprocate the indifference, take it easy for a while, things will change for the better usually.

It's tried and true! If you want to know more about these dating strategies, I know there's an ebook out there called StraightSecrets, it's not cheap though.

Sigma Chi sued George Mason university following its 10 year suspension of the chapter

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Is 10 year suspension too heavy a punishment for hazing? Sigma Chi decided to sue George Mason University, and to seek declaratory relief and money damages. The suspension was triggered not by a single by a series of events, which included alleged sexual assault on underage girls. The list of charge includes:

1) Hazing - 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 7, 2005, in the area of Fenwick Library on the George Mason Campus

2) Providing alcohol to minors – Sept. 7, 2005

3) Underage consumption of alcohol – Sept.7, 2005

4) Sponsoring a party under conditions that resulted in sexual assaults on a female guest - Feb. 26, 2005 and Sept. 7, 2005

As of now, the chapter is unrecognized by the university. The row continues online with Sigma Chi supporters leaving angry comments on the Broadside website.

Rip-off prices at UK Abercrombie

Friday, January 11, 2008

Everyone seems to find out how expensive Abercrombie & Fitch is in the UK compare to the US. One of the comments in the DailyMail Abercrombie article said that "A polo top that retails for $49.99 in the states is being sold for £60 in the UK". This is equivalent of adding on $64 to the US price making it $113)

Ohlala Mag has an article on Kris Lewin, the new beautiful face at AF with the signature hot body. One of the comments went like this:

I personally have found A&F clothes to be pretty high in quality while my Hilfiger or Calvin Klein dress shirts are more costly and fall apart MUCH sooner. Their clothes are very rugged in general, which is why dollar for dollar, I'll continue to spend my money there over GAP, Banana and whatever other place offer semi-professional work attire (aka casual).

I don't personally own that many AF items, I do have to agree that the Hilfiger products do fall apart very soon. They also look kind of cheap compare to Calvin Klein, Brooks Brothers and AF.

Frat guy and the STD girl

Friday, January 4, 2008

One very funny story about a fraternity guy and a "STD" girl...(via Pitt News)

Ah, the second semester of the year. Finally settled into dorms and apartments, the lines at the bookstore have dwindled down to the slacking few and students can be spotted nodding off in classrooms across campus already.

To the eager freshmen who survived their arrival here at Pitt in the fall, I commend you. You have passed your first test. No doubt your parents assisted you in this feat, your mother breaking down in tears as she made your bed, your father pulling you close for a warm embrace and asking if you need more money before they drove away.

Yeah, that'll change.

Entering my junior year, last fall I had the joy of moving into Bouquet Gardens. This time around, my parents slowed the car just enough for me to grab some of my belongings before tucking and rolling out onto the pavement as they flung the rest of my stuff after me, using the back of my head as a target.

But listen, my children, and you shall hear the embarrassing tale of my freshman year, and why this drop-off at Pitt was a welcome adjustment.

The braces had barely been popped off my teeth as I sat in the front seat between my parents, grinning idiotically at the big, bad world of the University of Pittsburgh as we entered what my parents still refer to as the "big city" of Oakland. After a mere hour or two of looping around Forbes and Fifth trying to find the Litchfield Towers - yeah, it was that pitiful - we pulled into a parking lot loaded with fraternity brothers in brightly colored Arrival Survival shirts.

My parents climbed out and I slid across the bench seat, stumbling out of the car, all the while staring at a fraternity brother who appeared to have a beautiful aura about him. The brothers pointed my mother and me toward the Towers to rent a cart, and offered to help my dad unload the car.

I walked to the lobby in a daze, fantasizing about the gorgeous fraternity brother offering his family's prize cow and $500 to my father in exchange for my hand in marriage. So this is what college was like. Life was beautiful.

Five minutes or so later, give or take 30 seconds, my mother and I arrived back at the car, rented cart and key to my room in tow. The fraternity brothers helped load my belongings into the cart and offered further assistance in helping us to my room.

Miracle of miracles, I ended up pulling up the rear with the love of my life, who turned to me in our first stolen moment of privacy and passionately whispered:

"So, you wrote a speech about sexually transmitted diseases in high school, eh?"

Followed by a snicker and an elbow jab to his frat buddy.

I was nothing short of mortified. In the five minutes that I had left my future husband, my father had revealed the dorkiest secret of my life: I had not only written a speech in high school about sexually transmitted diseases and the alarming prevalence among teenagers, but I also competed in public speaking tournaments with it. Why didn't my dad tell him I was captain of the Reading Team and led them to three consecutive first place wins in junior high while he was at it?

A sort of numbness took over my body. I know that my face must have been glowing the red color of the neon sign for the "O."

I barely noticed that my father did not allow anyone else on the elevator once we finally got one, manning it as though he were the Skipper on a private vessel to the 20th floor of Tower B. Or the fact that he tipped each fraternity brother a dollar for his help.

I'd like to tell you that I became a well-adjusted Pitt student following that tragic day, but it's simply not true. To this day, whenever I see a brother from that fraternity, he is sure to yell:

"Hey, STD girl!"

I swear a freshman that I have never met did it just the other day.

So, congratulations well-adjusted freshmen. And remember to keep the tuck-and-roll drop-off in mind for next year. After all, it's never too late for a dad to mark you with a scarlet letter - or three.

Lavaliering and pinning

I don't know how many chapters have formal pinning or lavaliering ceremony. I read an old article from Penn State which they cite their frat members would "pole" the brother who has lavaliered, strip him naked, while other members thrown food at him. Of course, each fraternity / sorority has its very own rituals. I know many sororities do candle passes, usually for lavaliering / pinning / engagement or getting knocked up (whichever comes first!).

Question for guys: Would you ever give your pin to your girlfriend?

Question for girls: Would you ever lavalier a guy? Do you think guys and girls view the lavalier differently?

Have you been hated by your own frat house members?

Thursday, January 3, 2008

I read something on Greek Chat today that got me thinking about in-group and out group behavior, and also the quality of greek meetings. A frat brother transferred from one chapter to another, and found that he had problem relating to more than 90% of the "native" members.

There are a few options available to him which include 1. Go with the flow. 2. Become inactive, and graduate as an alum in good standing. Or 3. Drop out.

The in-group / out-group effect in social categorization has long been documented by psychologists. We like in-group members much more than out-group members, the word"We" has positive connotations; "we" automatically activates positive associations. In many cases this liking depends merely on the knowledge of shared group membership. Not only that, people have a tendency to view all outgroup members as homogeneous.

Another member provided a very plausible diagnosis of the situation, which he believed that the apathy in itself is not the problem but a symptom of other problems. They may include overprogramming, events that are not of high quality and poorly-run meetings.

Have you ever been hated by our own frat brothers / sorority sisters? Please share it here.

What's it like to have a Fraternity boyfriend?

photo credit: L.G. Patterson / AP

Certain words automatically come to mind when we hear the word fraternity: party, quarterback, steroids, alcohol, hazing, servitude, dirty laundry. The Sigma Phi Epsilon brothers got into trouble last year with the university for hazing, a "kidnapping" incident so creative that got the campus police involved. Following this incident, the national group kicked out a few members and set new standards which included having a minimum GPA. Sigma Phi Epsilon now even has a "Balanced Man" intiative which add yoga, wine tasting and trips to Opera to its routine activities.

"It was kind of difficult for us," chapter president Keith Ziercher said. "It's been a hard transition."

Does a "more balanced" fraternity sound like something you would like to be part of? For those of us who have a frat boyfriend, would the current "taming" trend make your guys less attractive to you?

Fraternity and Sorority members not paying their fees

Friday, November 30, 2007

Have you ever encountered a sticky situation of your members don't pay dues on time? Members not paying their dues affect the financial and housing stability of a chapter, yet it is not always easy to find someone to be the bad guy to collect money (and it is not always effective). I know many chapters use a billing service called Omega Financial, it claims to increase the net income of chapters AFTER the fees.

Fraternity Spotlight: Zach Petkewicz and Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Saturday, November 3, 2007

This is a bit late. I know very little about the Virginia Tech shooting incident itself except the bits I saw on TV, but what I read about Zach Petkewicz triggered me to include this and highlight the fraternity this real hero is part of.

"Zach Petkewicz is one of the heroes, but when the shooting started, his first reaction was fear.
"I crouched down like everybody else," he told Matt Lauer on TODAY. "I got behind the teacher’s podium. Initially it was just fear."

But the gunshots and screams coming through the walls of his Norris Hall classroom didn’t go away. Petkewicz was "just hearing gunshots — eventually, the gunshots got closer."

Petkewicz looked at the classroom door. It struck him that "There’s nothing stopping him from coming in here. We were just sitting ducks."

Galvanized to action, Petkewicz grabbed a table and with his classmates shoved it against the door. Students stood at each end of the table holding it to the cinderblock walls around the door frame.

The shooter, Cho Seung Hui, his bloody work done in the classroom next door, "tried the door handle" Petkewicz said. Finding the door blocked, he threw his shoulder against it, forcing it open six inches. "

Petkewicz has such a casual, shrugging style of describing the incident. The brothers at SAE have created a blog which people can write comments.

Fraternity and Sororities websites - A step by step guide to creating your chapter's website

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

New Greek chapters are established every month! This is a guide to help you set up your chapter's website with minimal hassles and cash.

1. Choose a hosting service provider. It could be free (e.g. Geocities) or paid (Yahoo paid hosting, ipowerweb etc). A very limited national greek organizations provide web hosting for their chapters, it maybe worthwhile to check out the national site to see if this service is available. Since most hosting services only charge a few dollars per month, it is actually more desirable to go professional especially you want to be able to run scripts on your site (more of that later) Blogger.com or Wordpress.com is a good place to start your chapter's blog if you have a small budget and have limited technical skills, the ads are not as intrusive as other free service providers. Try to stay away from Geocities or Tripods as they usually come with an excessive amount of ads on the pages.

2. Create content. No one wants to visit your site unless there is something for them. No one wants to read a 10-page essay too. The most common contents may include event photos and stories. If you use Blogger or wordpress then you don't even need html skills, you can easily post photos, add yotube video. If you decide to create pages from the scratch using html, css etc, try the tutorials at HTML goodies , they cover topics like how to align texts, create columns etc. There are lots of free web templates out there that you can use too, just search "web template" in google and you shall find. If you host your own site, you can install novelty scripts such as dating, quotes etc.

Regardless whether you host your own site or use a free service, you can always find free, third party hosted forums and galleries to add to your site. Flickr.com is a good photo gallery provider. Don't underestimate how powerful photos are for promotional purposes, if your chapter is engaged in building a new house, hosting a charity event or even planning a co-ed sleep over party, the photos can easily attract prospective members and alumni to be involved in what you're doing.

3. Get free links. Make sure you ask your student body to put a link up from their site, usually under the clubs and society page. Some colleges may be willing to help you promote your chapter by putting a link up from their faculty website, provided your site is related (e.g. if your fraternity is Chemistry focused you may ask the Chemistry department to put a link up for you, try to approach the "student activity coordinator")
